Roanoke Star Ready for Gothia Cup

Roanoke Star Ready for Gothia Cup

Roanoke Star will send a number of players, parents and coaches on the annual trip to Europe to take part in the world famous Gothia Cup in Sweden from July 10 – July 24. The teams that are representing Roanoke Star are the 15 Boys Premier, 15 Boys Elite, 14 girls Premier and 14 girls Elite. In all, over 70 people will make the trip.

The journey will last for 14 days and is an experience that everyone will not forget. The teams will take part in two tournaments while in Sweden including the Gothia Cup, also known as the World Youth Cup. Players will get the opportunity to test their skills against teams from over 60 different countries in one of the best youth soccer tournaments in the world.

The players will stay in one central location in Gothenburg where they will mix with players from around the world. In the past, the event has seen players such as English goal scoring legend Alan Shearer, Italian superstar Andrea Pirlo and Brazilian star Ze Roberto all take part. Hopefully one of our own from Roanoke will soon be remembered as gracing the hallowed (artificial) turf at the Heden center in Gothenburg!

This year is the 16th year that Roanoke Star has entered the event and is a regular part of the curriculum at Roanoke Star for U14 and U15 players within the club. Players are encouraged to raise money throughout the year to offset the cost of the trip. Every year those fundraising efforts are rewarded with a trip that is memorable and educational at the same time.
