Patrick Henry High School graduate and former Virginia Tech player Lang Wedemeyer was named the women’s soccer coach at Liberty University on Tuesday.
He has spent the past 17 years as the coach at South Dakota State. Wedemeyer guided the Jackrabbits to 161 wins and four NCAA Division I tournament berths, including bids the past three seasons. He coached the program from its inception, guiding it from Division II to Division I and twice earning Summit League coach of the year honors.
Before steering the Jackrabbits, he spent three years as the director of coaching and the women’s coordinator for the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club, which had 28 teams at the time. He coached the under-18 and under-14 girls teams and was the boys and girls director for the Western District Olympic Development Program.
He played for the Hokies for two years before concluding his college career at Old Dominion. He played pro soccer for the Roanoke Wrath.
Wedemeyer succeeds Nate Norman, who resigned earlier this month to become an assistant at his alma mater, Notre Dame. He led Liberty to the NCAAs last fall.
